Telangana BJP has accused the Congress party of ‘murdering’ the Constitution and democracy by influencing the Speaker’s decision on the defection of MLAs’ issue.
Party president N. Ramchander Rao, in a press statement on Wednesday, said that the Speaker’s decision to dismiss the applications against the defected MLAs has been ‘expected’ as it has been ‘influenced by the party’ and a ‘diktat’ of the party leadership.
“It is against the Constitution which the Congress claims to protect. The decision has exposed the party as it does not even respect their own leader Rajiv Gandhi who brought forth the Anti-Defection Law,” he attested, and pointed out that those leaders moving with Constitution in their pockets had gone against it.
Earlier, Mr. Rao told the media that the Congress party is deliberately creating ‘unnecessary’ political controversy over the change in the name of MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act), even though the scheme is only being strengthened to benefit more poor people.
The Centre is inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of Gram Swaraj and the concept of Ram Rajya in Indian culture, and the BJP-led Central Government has introduced the ‘Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Grameen) OR (VB-GRAM-G) in line with the goal of Viksit Bharat 2047 for rural development, he said.
It was the Modi government that made MGNREGA truly beneficial for the rural poor by providing employment opportunities, spending more than ₹8 lakh crore in the last 11 years compared to just about ₹1 lakh crore during Congress rule, claimed the BJP leader. Mr. Rao questioned why the Congress is making a big issue out of the name change when even the Telangana Mother statue was renamed without controversy.
In a separate statement, chief spokesperson N.V. Subash strongly condemned the Congress party for staging protests against the Centre’s new rural development initiative, describing them as “politically motivated, deceptive, and steeped in hypocrisy”.
