Navy Day celebrations to be held at Shangumughom this year

The Indian Navy will organise an Operational Demonstration on December 4 at Shangumughom here in connection with this year’s Navy Day celebrations.

Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, will host the gala event.

The Navy is yet to receive confirmation regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.

The decision to have Thiruvananthapuram as the venue is in continuation of the Navy’s effort to organise the annual celebrations at locations other than major naval stations. In 2023, it was held at Sindhudurg in Maharashtra and in 2024, at Puri in Odisha.

Commodore Varghese Mathew, Naval Officer-in-Charge (Kerala) briefed the media about the December 4 event at a press conference on Monday.

This event will provide a unique opportunity to the citizens to witness various facets of Indian Navy’s multi domain operations, the Navy said. The Operational Demonstration will showcase the Indian Navy’s indigenous efforts towards ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat and resolve as the ‘Preferred Security Partner’ in the Indian Ocean Region guided by the broader vision of Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions (MAHASAGAR).

‘Navy Day’ is observed on December 4 every year to commemorate the Indian Navy’s attack of the Karachi Harbour during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. Named Operation Trident, this action served to showcase India’s maritime power.

Teams from the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, will visit selected colleges and schools in Thiruvananthapuram for outreach programmes and workshops. A Naval Band performance will be conducted by the Southern Naval Command Band at Thiruvananthapuram on November 26.
