Jyoti Baleshwar Manjhi, the MLA from Bihar’s Barachatti constituency and a candidate of Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustan Awam Morcha (HAM), suffered serious injuries after her vehicle allegedly came under attack by unidentified miscreants on Wednesday night.
Manjhi, who was campaigning in Barachatti’s Sulebatta mod, was injured when unknown suspects hurled bricks at her stones at her open vehicle. One of the stones hit her chest, and she also received injuries in her head and hands. After the attack, there was chaos at the scene and her supporters quickly moved her to a safe place.
She was initially treated at a local hospital and later referred to Magadh Medical College, while police launched an investigation into the attack. Gaya SSP Anand Kumar said statements from six witnesses had been taken, but the identity of the suspects is yet to be ascertained.

“Jyoti Manjhi, who was returning to her office after campaigning, was reportedly attacked while standing near her vehicle in Barachatti. A stone was thrown at her by an unidentified individual, hitting her. The police responded quickly, with an FST vehicle and a patrolling car stationed nearby. However, no one witnessed the attacker or could identify who threw the stone. The woman with her at the time also couldn’t provide any details," said DSP Ajay Prasad.
This is not the first time Manjhi has come under attack, according to reports. Earlier, her campaign vehicle was targeted in Kharanti village under the Magadh University police station area, where unidentified miscreants tore posters from her vehicle. The second incident took place in the Dema village, where bike-borne youths entered her convoy shouting slogans during her outreach programme.
Jitan Ram Manjhi strongly condemned the incident, calling it an attack on democracy and demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators. Manjhi’s supporters are also enraged over the incident, with the incident occurring on the eve of the first phase of the Bihar Assembly election on Thursday.
Jyoti Manjhi is a candidate from the Barachatti Assembly constituency and Jitan Ram Manjhi’s relative, with her daughter married to his son. Deepa Manjhi, also known as Deepa Kumari, is also a sitting HAM MLA from the Imamganj Assembly constituency.
Jyoti Manjhi won the 2020 Bihar Assembly election from the Barachatti (reserved) seat, defeating Samta Devi, the RJD candidate, in a tough contest as the NDA candidate. This victory was significant because Barachatti has traditionally been considered an RJD stronghold.
As part of the NDA seat-sharing plan, Deepa Manjhi and her mother Jyoti Manjhi are among the six candidates of Jitan Ram Manjhi’s party. The NDA has allocated 101 seats each to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (United) (JDU), while Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) got 29 seats.
