Neeraj Chopra achieved yet another feat in his illustrious career on Saturday by becoming the first Indian to compete in an international event as its host at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday.

Well, the accolades didn’t stop there as the Indian cruised to a smooth top-placed finish to clinch the title that already bore his name.

Having registered a commanding throw of 86.18m that wouldn’t be bested by any, Neeraj Chopra cruised to an easy title win at his inaugural namesake event.

Under overcast, cool, and windy conditions, and a temperature measuring around 24 degrees Celsius, the Kanteerava Stadium was not full, but it was enough to make a deafening noise to support Chopra.

Watched by family members and friends, Chopra was cheered by the adoring fans in all his throws in the 12-man competition. Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah also watched the competition from the VVIP area.

There was a bit of a hitch from the Indian, who started off with a foul throw. But, the only way was up from there on out for Chopra, who claimed the top spot in the second round with a throw of 82.99m and kept staying at it.

There was a bit of stiff competition from the likes of Sri Lanka’s Pathirage and Kenya’s Julius Yego, who inched closer and closer to Neeraj’s best.

But, in the third round, the Indian registered a scintillating attempt that clocked in at 86.18m, a mark that wouldn’t be beaten by any from then on out.

The event, initially set to be held in Panchkula, the event was relocated to Bengaluru due to lighting limitations at the original venue that affected live telecast capabilities.

The event, granted Category A status by World Athletics, is considered a “dream project" of Chopra and aims to establish India as a credible host of elite-level athletics events.

It had to be postponed following the terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including several tourists.
