Australian pacer Scott Boland became the 12th from his country and overall the 49th player to register a hat-trick in Test cricket during the third Test against West Indies at Sabina Park in Kingston on Tuesday. West Indies were bowled out for an embarrassing 27 as Australia beat the young Caribbean side by 176 runs in the pink ball Test to clean sweep the three-match series 3-0.
Bowling just his second over during the second innings — where West Indies were already six down for 26, in a pursuit of 204 — Boland decimated West Indies’ lower-order, leaving them 26 for nine as the visitors were staring at New Zealand’s unwanted record of the lowest total in Test matches.
Boland started the 13th over with a wicket of Justin Greaves. The batter playing on 11 of 23, played for an inswinger, but the ball kept straight after pitching and took a healthy nick outside off and went straight to lanky Beau Webster at second slip. Interestingly, Greaves’s 11 made him the highest run-getter for West Indies in the innings. The No. 9 batter, Shamar Joseph, was trapped in front off a nip-backer from Boland to give him his second scalp in as many deliveries. Then came vice captain Jomel Warrican, who was cleaned up by a beautiful slower delivery, one that jadded back a mile to find a big bat-pad gap.

Boland’s hat-trick is the second one this year after Pakistan’s Noman Ali also picked three wickets in three deliveries against the same West Indies earlier in January.
Fred Spofforth was the first player to record a hat-trick in cricket. Playing for Australia, the right-arm pacer from New South Wales took a hat-trick against England in 1879.
Among Indians, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan and Jasprit Bumrah have registered hat-tricks in Test cricket.
