Ace Indian javelin throw athlete Neeraj Chopra will headline the final of his event at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, on Thursday as the 27-year-old double Olympic medallist looks to defend his title.

However, it will be a task easier said than done as Pakistan’s pride, Arshad Nadeem, who pipped Chopra to the Olympic gold at Paris 2024, will be part of the final field as he goes in search of his maiden World Title.

Chopra seeks to script history by becoming just the third athlete to successfully defend his crown, after Czech coach Jan Zelenzy and Anderson Peters of Grenada.

The event will also mark the first time the Indo-Pak rivals go head-to-head after the Olympic finals, due to a breakdown in the relationships between the nations following unprompted attacks on Indian by its neighbouring nation.

Chopra made it through to the final of the event with a ‘one-and-done’ attempt at the qualification round a day earlier as he breached the automatic qualification mark of 84.50m on his first try.

Chopra’s one and only effort on Wednesday came in at 84.80m earning him his berth in the summit clash as compatriot Sachin Yadav also secured his place in the event with an attempt of 83.67m, while Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh failed to make it through to the championship round.
