Netflix is trying something new—using generative AI to fix the content overload it helped create. With so many shows and movies to choose from, subscribers often end up just scrolling, not watching. So now, Netflix wants AI to do the heavy lifting. Elizabeth Stone, Netflix’s chief product and technology officer, talked about this at the Bloomberg Tech conference in San Francisco. She said Netflix is rolling out AI tools designed to cut through the noise and help people actually find something to watch.
The idea is simple: make content discovery more personal and more fun. Netflix’s AI looks at your mood, what you’ve watched lately, and even whether you type, talk, or just browse. It tries to figure out exactly what you want—even if you don’t know yourself. They’re testing out a voice-based feature that lets you say things like, “Show me a funny show under 30 minutes.” Then, boom—it gives you something that fits.
Here’s how it works: the system weighs what you’ve watched before, what’s trending, what people are buzzing about online, and even what time you’re watching. The end goal is to serve up recommendations that feel both familiar and fresh, so you’re not stuck scrolling through endless titles you’ve already seen—or ignored.
Netflix wants more than just happier viewers. By making recommendations smarter, the company is aiming to boost satisfaction and keep subscribers from jumping ship to another streaming service. There’s real pressure; with all the competition from Disney+, Prime Video, and HBO Max, Netflix has to work harder to help you cut through the chaos of its massive catalog.
This push is just one part of Netflix’s larger AI strategy. Beyond recommendations, they’ve already started using AI tech from companies like Runway AI to streamline video production—a move that’s stirred up debate in Hollywood. But now they’re putting that AI muscle toward one of streaming’s biggest headaches: finding something to watch.
Whether it’s voice search, shows picked to match your mood, or instantly surfacing whatever’s trending, these AI features are all about making it less about scrolling and more about watching. And for people overwhelmed by choices, that’s a big deal.
