A new online search tool that allows people to check if their relatives were members of the Nazi Party has attracted millions of users within weeks of its launch. The database, created by Die Zeit, brings together historical records to help individuals explore their family past.
The project was launched with the aim of encouraging open discussion about history. In an editorial, the publication said the effort was meant to “end the silence born of misplaced shame." The platform has been developed in partnership with archives in both Germany and the United States, according to a report by CNN.
The records trace back to the rise of the Nazi Party, which was founded after the First World War and grew rapidly during the economic crisis of the Great Depression. By the time Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, the party had become a dominant force, eventually controlling nearly all aspects of life in Germany. According to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, widespread support for the regime had grown by the late 1930s.
Data cited by Die Zeit shows that around 10.2 million Germans joined the party between 1925 and the end of World War II, with membership peaking at about 9 million. Although the Nazis tried to destroy membership records during the final days of the war, many were preserved and later stored in archives, including the German Federal Archives and the US National Archives.
The response to the new tool has been overwhelming. Christian Staas, head of Die Zeit’s history department, told CNN that the interest in family history appears to be growing. He noted that while thousands of people request such records every year, the online release has made access much easier.
“This level of interest does seem relatively new, and I’m sure the fact that most former NSDAP (Nazi party) members, or people involved in Nazi crimes or war crimes, are no longer alive makes it easier for many people to ask questions about their own family history."
“In opinion polls, only very few Germans say their ancestors supported the Nazi regime, and quite a lot believe their families opposed Hitler. That obviously can’t be true. Perhaps our search engine helps people arrive at a more realistic view of the past," he added.
Users have shared emotional responses after discovering details about their families.
“My feelings are all over the place right now," wrote one, identified only as Katha1927. “I’m wondering which entry date I find worse: 1931 –- so early, already so convinced? Or 1941 –- even though they already knew so much?"
“For over 40 years I wondered if my great-grandfather was a member. He was a railroad engineer during the Nazi era and always flew into a rage whenever the topic of the war came up. Question answered. Thank you, ZEIT. Even though it hurts terribly," wrote another user.
Experts say the archive could play an important role in understanding history. Christine Schmidt of the Wiener Holocaust Library described it as a valuable resource, noting that people joined the Nazi Party for different reasons, including economic hardship, nationalism and ideology.
She added that wider access to such records can help counter misinformation and deepen understanding of the Holocaust, reminding people of the importance of documented history.
