Bhavik Maheshwari (26), who had solemnised a simple court marriage in Vadodara two days ago, was among those killed in the Air India flight crash that occurred shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon. The flight was bound for London and carried 241 passengers and crew members, with only one survivor.
Bhavik, a resident of Vadodara’s Vadi locality, had planned to return to London for work, while his parents intended to host a more elaborate wedding ceremony upon his return to India.
The young man’s father, Arjun Maheshwari, struggled to contain his grief as he addressed the media a day after the tragedy.
“When he came to Vadodara two weeks ago on vacation, we arranged his marriage,” Mr. Maheshwari said, his eyes swollen from crying.
The father recalled that the two had their final conversation around 1 p.m. on Thursday, moments before take-off. “He called me to say that everything was done and he was ready for take-off. He asked me not to worry as he was going home. He had completed his studies and was working in London. After half an hour, nobody could make any sense of what happened,” Mr. Maheshwari said.
The Maheshwari family, well-known in their locality, was in a state of shock.
“Happiness came to the family two days ago because a beloved son got married. Bhavik was living in London for the last several years. He visited Vadodara for 15 days every year to spend time with us,” said a relative.
According to family members, Bhavik was persuaded to delay his return and get married during this visit. He agreed, and the couple registered their marriage on June 10 in a simple court ceremony.
His newly-wed wife accompanied him to Ahmedabad to see him off. “She had not even reached home when the message came that the plane had crashed. It was as if a mountain of grief fell on us,” the relative said.
