NFL Films Senior Producer and NFL Analyst Greg Cosell recently appeared on the Ross Tucker Football Podcast, where he discussed the Kansas City Chiefs’ ongoing hurdles in the 2025 season.

Cosell said the Chiefs were continuing a trend of averaging only 22 points per game, as in the previous two seasons. Their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, plays well outside the offensive structure, but maintaining that consistency has been challenging. Cosell added that the absence of wide receiver Rashee Rice in the first six games and the failure of wide receiver Xavier Worthy to become the vertical threat many expected, despite his 4.21-second 40-yard dash excellence at the 2024 NFL Combine, have contributed to a lack of a structured, precise passing game.

This makes it harder to consistently rely on Mahomes’ special plays.

“What happened with the Chiefs?” Ross Tucker asked Greg Cosell on Ross Tucker Football Podcast. “Offensively, they were not very good this year,” Cosell explained. “It goes back to their previous years; the last two years, they only averaged 22 points a game. There’s a fine line between playing outside of structure and being great, which Mahomes is, and playing within the structure of an offense.

As great as Mahomes is outside of structure, it is hard to be consistent that way. My sense was that too many times this year, that line got crossed to the negative side, and I’m not blaming Patrick Mahomes.

“Obviously, the offensive line had issues,” Cosell continued. “He [Patrick Mahomes] didn’t play with [Rashee] Rice for the first six games. [Xavier] Worthy has not developed into the vertical dimensions that many thought that he would when he was drafted with that 4.21[seconds for a 40-yard dash] speed at the combine.

You don’t see very many vertical throws in their offense. It’s a combination of many things, but watching them, you don’t get a sense of a structured, precise passing game.

It’s hard to live, and as great as Mahomes is, it’s hard to live with the idea that your quarterback is going to make those special plays every single week and be consistent.”

Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL in the loss to Los Angeles. He had surgery Monday night in Dallas. Surgeons told the Chiefs the injury was fixable and that he had no artery, nerve, joint surface, or meniscus damage.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid on QB Gardner Minshew: 'He has an opportunity and wants to do well'

Andy Reid says Patrick Mahomes will do great with rehab

Head coach Andy Reid talked about Mahomes’ recovery in Wednesday’s press conference, “He [Mahomes]’s so positive right now.

He attacked this thing the day after. You wouldn’t expect anything less. ‘Get me up, get me going,’ he’s basically saying that an hour after the game. ‘Brace me up and let me go.’ It’s not one of those injuries, obviously, but that’s his mindset. I think he’ll do great with the rehab. He’s a pretty fast healer that way.

And his attitude is 90% of the thing of how you go about it, how you’re willing to push through the pain of getting it right.” Backup QB Gardner Minshew, a seven-year veteran, is set to take Patrick Mahomes’ place for the remaining three games. “He [Gardner Minshew] has an opportunity and wants to do well. It’s great for him career-wise,” Reid said on December 18.Also Read: NFL Net Worth rumors: Can Patrick Mahomes catch Travis Kelce in the Million-Dollar Net Worth race before 2025 Ends?
