Cowboys may turn to proven 2-time Super Bowl champion to fix CB depth issue after frustrating release decision

Dallas Cowboys have made it clear this offseason that fixing the defense is no longer optional. It had to happen. After a year where stops were rare and confidence even rarer, the front office has spent the past week patching holes with urgency.

The results are mixed, and some moves carry questions, but one thing is certain. This unit looks more competitive today than it did at the end of last season. There is still work to be done, though. With two first-round picks sitting at No. 12 and No. 20, the Cowboys have flexibility, but also pressure. Both Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones have hinted at using those picks in a trade. At the same time, relying too heavily on rookies to fix structural issues can backfire.

That leaves veteran free agency as a logical bridge.

Cowboys CB depth move: why L’Jarius Sneed fits the need now

Cornerback remains one of the more delicate spots on the roster, and this is where L'Jarius Sneed enters the conversation. Recently released by the Tennessee Titans, Sneed suddenly becomes a low-risk option with a high ceiling. The timing matters. Dallas needs help now, not just potential later.Sneed’s résumé carries weight. A two-time Super Bowl winner with the Kansas City Chiefs, he built his reputation on physical coverage and big-game poise.

Yet his recent stretch has been uneven. Injuries limited him to just 12 games over the past two seasons, and he is still working his way back from a quad issue. Titans GM Mike Borgonzi summed it up plainly: “Frustrating for him. But he’s continued to work and get himself healthy.

That uncertainty is exactly why this could work in Dallas. The cost will not be overwhelming, and the upside is easy to see.

Cowboys CB depth gamble could ease draft pressure

Dallas does not need Sneed to be perfect. It needs him to be available and reliable in stretches.

Right now, the cornerback group carries more questions than answers. DaRon Bland remains a key piece, but health is not guaranteed. Shavon Revel Jr. is still developing after a difficult 2025 season following his return from an ACL injury. Depth, not star power, is the priority here. That is why voices around the team see logic in the move. Analyst Adam Schultz put it simply: “Yes, the Cowboys already have Cobie Durant to go with DaRon Bland and Shavon Revel Jr., but Sneed’s experience could prove invaluable. Plus, he won’t break the bank, given that he was released. Dallas can get him in at cost. But will they want to?“I say a phone call at least has to be made.”It is not a move that guarantees anything. It is a calculated swing. But for a team trying to avoid forcing draft picks into immediate roles, that kind of swing might be necessary. Sometimes the smartest roster decisions are the quiet ones that buy time.
