The NHL trade deadline is currently a hot topic in the NHL world, and players like Kiefer Sherwood, Macklin Celebrini, Brad Marchand, Ryan O’Reilly, Steven Stamkos, and Dougie Hamilton put them straight into hot debates among the teams.
As the March 6 deadline rapidly approaches, the teams holding wildcard spots are caught between making a move or being patient, especially when the playoff race is not only tight but also quite unpredictable. The deadline's drama is further compounded by the unlikely ones among the buyers, the San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, and Nashville Predators, who have completely changed the narrative by their actions.
The latest reports from ESPN and Sportsnet at this week’s beginning claimed that these teams were the least likely to be in the buying market at all; however, strong plays coupled with fortuitous rebounds have already started to change the conversation within the clubs.
Hence, with cap space and momentum on their side, front offices are quietly taking a look at the upgrades that could convert the surprise seasons into real playoff pushes.
Why could these four teams shake up the NHL trade deadline?
The San Jose Sharks are on top of the list after a fantastic ascension in the Western Conference standings. ESPN said on Monday that the Sharks have pulled off a trade with the Canucks by acquiring Kiefer Sherwood, a winger, indicating a brave stance from the General Manager, Mike Grier. The general manager could use the almost $8 million cap space and two first-round picks to combine assets and aim at a long-term piece.
Sportsnet sources rumored defenseman Dougie Hamilton as a possible destination, particularly as the Sharks are in the playoff mix.
This Is A BOLD Move By The Sharks...
The Boston Bruins in the East have rewritten the script of last season. After selling at the deadline last year, now Boston is in a wild-card position, and its victories in the last ten games are 8-2-0. As per a Sportsnet report, GM Don Sweeney On Saturday, was eyeing numerous veteran targets before Rasmus Andersson was dealt to another team.
The Bruins are practically on the limit of their salary cap, but they might still go for a rough and tough forward to bolster their chances in the playoffs. The Buffalo Sabres are also among the teams that have improved after a bad start. According to some league insiders earlier this week, new GM Jarmo Kekalainen is under pressure to take decisive action. The Sabres' cap situation would make it possible for them to swap a lower for a higher-experienced player, thereby reviving fans' hopes after years of desperation.Last but not least, the Nashville Predators continue to be a wild card. Barry Trotz, the GM, told the reporters on Sunday that he was looking at both short-term and long-term improvements. Nashville has a huge amount of more than $14 million in cap space, and they can take a big contract and catch the league by surprise. As the deadline approaches, these four teams probably will not make it to the news—but one clever action could change their whole seasons.
