Big NHL trade talk is heating up, and two major names are at the center of it, Mitch Marner and Jason Robertson. During an appearance on The Jeff Marek Show on Sportsnet 590 this week, hockey insider Elliotte Friedman raised a huge question about the future of both stars.
What happens if the Toronto Maple Leafs look to move Marner and he’s open to joining Dallas? Could that change everything for the Stars and their top forward, Robertson?
Elliotte Friedman connects Mitch Marner trade talks to Jason Robertson’s future with Dallas Stars
On Wednesday, June 26, 2025, Elliotte Friedman discussed a major “what if” scenario on Sportsnet 590. He wondered what Dallas would do if Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner agreed to be traded to the Dallas Stars.Friedman said, “If you’re Dallas, is there any chance Mitch Marner says, ‘Yeah, I’m willing to go there’? Then, you’re forced into a decision [on Jason Robertson].”
Fans immediately started fresh arguments on social media when this concept went widely distributed. Marner is presently in the last year of his contract with the Maple Leafs. Should Toronto not view him as a future fit, they might consider trading him right away. Marner has a no-movement clause, therefore he has to accept any team he is sent to. Things could become complex for the Stars if Dallas is one of such teams.Robertson, 24, is under contract with Dallas through 2026, but his role and future may come into question if another star winger like Marner is added to the roster.
Jason Robertson’s status could become clearer after July 1 as trade window opens
According to Elliotte Friedman, fans may get a better sense of what Dallas is thinking after July 1, 2025. That’s when free agency begins, and teams make major changes to their rosters.Friedman mentioned that Dallas may have to decide if they want to hold on to Jason Robertson or make a bold move involving Mitch Marner.“Once July 1 hits, I think we’ll start to get a clearer idea of Robertson’s future,” Friedman said during the interview. Also Read: NHL Rumors: Joel Quenneville Likely To Add Former Oilers Coach Jay Woodcroft In Power Duo For DucksRobertson had a solid 2024–25 season and remains one of the top young talents in the league.
