The MHA had received a request from the Maharashtra government to repatriate Date to the state. Date, like Shukla, is likely to be given a two-year tenure as the state police chief, with his tenure ending in December 2027.
Date was one of the officers who had taken on the terrorists during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. His bravery and presence of mind led to the rescue of hostages at the Cama and Albless Hospital for women and children. The officer was later awarded the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry.
Date has held several important postings, including the chief of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). He was the first commissioner of the newly formed Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) Police Commissionerate, established in 2020, as the Joint Commissioner (Law and Order), and later as Joint Commissioner of the Crime Branch in Mumbai city.
Date, who holds a doctorate from Pune University, his home town, is also a qualified cost and management accountant from the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI).
