NMC allows increase of 50 MBBS seats each in two state med colleges from 2025–26 academic session

Ranchi: The National Medical Commission (NMC), the apex body in the country for medical education, has approved a total of 100 MBBS seats for two medical colleges, one private and one govt-run, in the state.In its updated MBBS seat matrix released by the policy and coordination (P&C) division of the NMC or Thursday and signed by the Rajeev Sharma, the P&C director, said after the medical assessment and rating board gave its nod, MGM Medical College Jamshedpur, one of the state govt’s oldest medical college, will get an increase of 50 MBBS seats taking the total number of seats in the college to 150. In addition, the Manipal Tata Medical College, Jamshedpur, a private college managed by the Tata Steel and the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, has been allowed to increase its number of MBBS seats by another 50 from its existing 150, taking the total to 200.

Intake of students for the increased seats could be done from the 2025-26 academic session, the NMC said.The NMC has urged all deans and principals of medical colleges, as well as parents and NEET-UG 2025 aspirants, to take note of the revised seat matrix while preparing for admissions and counselling. The new seat distribution will come into effect from the 2025–26 academic session and will directly influence the NEET-UG 2025 counselling process, as the additional seats will be allotted from this session onwards.

Welcoming the announcement, the additional chief secretary of the health department, Ajay Kumar Singh, said the increase in seats is the result of the state's continuous efforts to strengthen medical education in the state.“Our persistent efforts have resulted in the addition of more MBBS seats in the state. We aim to ensure that each medical college in the state has at least 150 seats. While one govt college has received approval this year, proposals for enhancing 50 seats each in four other colleges are currently under review,” Singh added.
