Austin Reaves scored a career-high 51 points, including four crucial free throws in the final 32 seconds, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 127-120 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Sunday, despite the absence of Luka Doncic.
Reaves hit 12 of 22 shots from the field and made six 3-pointers, marking the 500th of his career. He also contributed nine assists and 11 rebounds.
Reaves is now the fourth player in the past 40 years to achieve at least 50 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists in a single game, joining the ranks of Luka Doncic, Russell Westbrook (twice), and James Harden (twice). The last Lakers player to have 50-plus points, 11-plus rebounds, and nine-plus assists was Elgin Baylor, who recorded 50 points, 15 rebounds, and 11 assists against the Boston Celtics on February 13, 1963.
DeAndre Ayton added 22 points and 15 rebounds for the Lakers, while Rui Hachimura scored 18 points.
Doncic was ruled out before the game due to a sprained finger on his left hand and a bruised lower left leg. He is expected to be reevaluated in about a week, according to the Lakers.
This is another setback for Los Angeles, which does not expect to have LeBron James (sciatica) back until mid-November.
Against the Kings, Reaves’ performance made all the difference.
Reaves scored 15 points in the fourth quarter after the Kings took a four-point lead, including a crucial jumper that gave the Lakers a 122-116 lead with 1:48 remaining.
Zach LaVine led the Kings with 32 points, followed by five other players scoring in double figures.
DeMar DeRozan contributed 21 points, Domantas Sabonis had 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Dennis Schroder added 18 points and 12 assists.
Even without their top two scoring options, the Lakers started strong and built a 10-point lead in the first quarter.
Hachimura scored 10 points in the first nine minutes, while Ayton and Marcus Smart each added seven points, helping Los Angeles to a 31-21 lead.
The Kings made seven 3-pointers in the second quarter, including three from Westbrook, to tie the game at halftime.
