Residents of Nochikuppam, whose homes suffered damage due to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) work, have threatened to stage protests at its construction sites, unless an external agency such as IIT-Madras or CSIR–SERC is roped in to study the problem.
They allege that the cracks were caused due to CMRL works near the Light House on Marina Beach.
Kasinathan, a resident, said his family had been unable to enter the house ever since three balconies and a staircase collapsed. “I have been writing to the CMRL and various government agencies but to no avail. The cracks have been developing for over a year now, ever since they started the tunnelling work.”
K. Bharathi, a community leader whose house too saw a portion sinking, said a total of 40 houses had developed cracks and damage due to CMRL work. “During construction, their men would sit at our homes, and evaluate the impact of their work. They took note of new and old cracks. But now they refuse to acknowledge that their work caused the cracks.”
When contacted, CMRL officials denied that the cracks developed due to their work.
“We want an independent agency to come and conduct tests, and the government should ensure that the repairs are carried out,” Mr. Bharathi said.
