As the southwest monsoon retracts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru, said that the northeast monsoon is expected to keep its normal date after October 15.
IMD, Bengaluru, director C.S. Patil said the northeast monsoon, like the southwest monsoon, is expected to be normal this year. “South Interior Karnataka will receive heavy rains, while North Interior Karnataka and Coastal Karnataka will not,” he said.
The northeast monsoon season is between October and December and brings rain primarily to the southern Indian States, including parts of Karnataka.
The southwest monsoon this year arrived earlier than usual. Karnataka, during this crucial monsoon season, received 786 mm rainfall as against a normal of 675.6 mm from June 1 to September 1, but some districts reported deficient rainfall. According to IMD’s seasonal cumulative rainfall data, there was a departure of 16% rain during this period.
Mr. Patil, however, said rain is expected for the next few days in parts of Karnataka. In Bengaluru, while the maximum temperature remained normal at 26.8 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature on Wednesday saw a 1.1 degree Celsius increase at 21.1 degrees Celsius. The forecast for the next few days for the city is expected to be generally cloudy with light rain.
