New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Tom Latham dominated the West Indies bowling attack on Thursday, forging a massive 323-run partnership on day one of the third Test at Mount Maunganui. Conway remained unbeaten on 178 while Latham scored 137 as New Zealand finished the day at 334-1.Their partnership stands as New Zealand's second-highest opening stand in Tests, trailing only Glenn Turner and Terry Jarvis's 387 against the West Indies in Georgetown in 1972. This was also just the eighth time New Zealand has recorded a partnership exceeding 300 runs in Tests.

Conway, 34, displayed remarkable endurance, facing 279 balls throughout the day to score his sixth Test century. His innings included 25 fours, marking his second century of the year and first at home since January 2022.Latham's innings featured 15 fours and a six across 264 balls, securing his 15th Test century before being dismissed near the close of play. Nightwatchman Jacob Duffy was on nine when stumps were called.The opening pair's partnership remained largely unchallenged for the first two sessions. The only notable chance came in the third session when wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach dropped Latham off Anderson Phillip's bowling when he was on 104.
The decision to bat first by Latham proved successful despite the green appearance of the wicket, which is expected to favor spin later in the match.West Indies captain Roston Chase, who would have chosen to bowl first had he won the toss, expressed skepticism about the pitch's spinning prospects, stating he would "have to see it to believe it."Chase introduced his off-spin bowling after just 22 overs and continued for 19 overs throughout the day.
Kemar Roach emerged as the most effective bowler, claiming the sole wicket and finishing with figures of 1-63 from 17 overs.New Zealand made two changes to their lineup, bringing in spinner Ajaz Patel for his first home Test in five years and welcoming back wicketkeeper Tom Blundell following his injury absence.The West Indies made one change to their team, with batsman Alick Athanaze replacing injured fast bowler Ojay Shields.New Zealand currently leads the three-match series 1-0, following a draw in Christchurch and a nine-wicket victory in Wellington.
