Accusing the Jagatsinghpur Police of assaulting and threatening her and her minor son in a case in which her husband is an accused, a woman lodged a complaint with the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on Thursday.
The complainant, Aklima Bibi, a native of Khalupada in Jagatsinghpur, alleged that the police forcefully entered into her house on December 10 and forced her to tell whereabouts of her husband, Sk. Nawab, who is an accused in a theft case.
According to the complaint, the police again came to her house December 18 and called his minor son, a student of Class-8th from the school and took him to the police station where they assaulted him with belt and boots.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Aklima alleged that if her husband has any role in any theft, the police should take action against him and arrest him immediately.
“When the police can’t trace him, they are harassing us and threatening us. My husband doesn’t stay with us. He comes for one or two days once in a year or every six months. I don’t know where he is at present,” said Aklima.
Aklima said she has sent her complaint to the rights’ body and the DGP, Odisha seeking justice.
The police, however, refuted the allegations by the woman calling those “baseless, false, and motivated”. In a statement, the Jagatsinghpur police said the action by cops in the case was strictly in accordance with established legal procedures.
