Kolkata police arrested one person in connection with the rape case of a minor girl at Tarakeswar, near Kolkata, police said on Sunday (November 9, 2025). The minor was sleeping beside her grandmother on the road when she was abducted.

The crime took place on Friday (November 7, 2025) night. According to the grandmother of the minor survivor, she was abducted around 4 a.m. in the night and was later found in a pool of blood near the Tarakeswar railway high drain the following afternoon on Saturday (November 8).

“The forensic team has collected evidence and samples from the place of occurrence. We also collected CCTV footage. We have arrested a close relative of the minor,” Hooghly Rural Police Superintendent, Kamanasish Sen said on Sunday. He also added that they have formed a 5-member Special Investigation Team and were able to nab the prime accused within 24 hours of the complaint.

The accused has been taken into 7-day police custody. Police said that they are investigating the matter and did not reveal the details of the accused because the survivor is a minor.

The Child Welfare Committee has been roped in to oversee the case because the survivor is a minor.

The attacker allegedly cut through the mosquito net where they were sleeping inside and abducted the girl.

The survivor who reportedly belongs from the Banjara community is in a critical state and is undergoing treatment at the nearby Chandannagar hospital.

A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).

“This happened at around 4 a.m. I did not realise when or who took her away. We found her later in the afternoon,” the grandmother of the minor said while crying and carrying the child to the hospital.

The Bharatiya Janta Party leadership slammed the Mamata Banerjee government for negligence of women’s safety and law and order situation in the State.

“A 4-year old girl child has been raped in Tarkeshwar. Family rushes to Police Station, but FIR not registered! Taken to the Hospital - referred to Chandannagar. Tarkeshwar Police busy burying the Crime,” Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari wrote on his social media handle X.

Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh accused that under the Mamata Banerjee’s TMC government no women are safe. “Women are neither respected nor protected under this government,” Mr. Ghosh said.
