The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has raised objections over the admission process at the Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Jammu and Kashmir’s Katra, claiming that the majority of students enrolled in the first batch belong to the Muslim community.
The outfit further urged the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to take cognisance of the matter, news agency PTI reported.
In a letter addressed to the LG on November 1, VHP general secretary Bajrang Bagra claimed that out of the first batch of 50 students, only six are Hindus, while 44 are Muslims. He further alleged that a sizeable portion of the nursing college’s faculty members are either Muslims or Christians.
“We have learned that in the first batch of 50 students at the Institute of Medical Excellence, only six are Hindus, while 44 are Muslims. This fact not only contradicts religious beliefs but also deeply offends the sentiments of the local and wider Hindu community," the senior VHP functionary said as quoted by the news agency.
He said that while the VHP is not fully aware of the internal mechanics of the admission process, institutions linked to the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board should “appropriately accommodate religious sensitivities, cultural heritage and the expectations of future society."
Bagra said that VHP expects that the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, “respectfully understanding the gravity of the situation, will promptly review its admission and appointment policies so that the religious commitment of the institution, balance, and the expectations of devotees and society alike are preserved".
“Only Hindu teachers and staff" should be appointed in all these institutions, he demanded.
“It is also pertinent to request that the board undertake only such public welfare projects that do not hurt the sentiments of Mata Rani’s devotees and the devout Hindu community," he said in the letter.
Last week, the Rashtriya Bajrang Dal held a protest in Jammu, demanding that the medical institute be granted “minority institution" status to allow reservation of seats for Hindu students in the Union Territory.
