In one of the NBA’s most impactful offseason moves, the Orlando Magic secured Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies in a massive trade that sent shockwaves through the league. The 26-year-old sharpshooter arrives in Orlando with a new role, a new mission, and now, officially, a new jersey number.

With his No. 22 retired in team lore, the Magic announced that Bane will don No. 3 next season. For Bane and his new NBA home, it will be a fresh chapter.

Desmond Bane lands in Orlando Magic as roster centerpiece, switches to No. 3

The trade, first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, involved a steep package: “The Memphis Grizzlies are trading Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks and one first-round pick swap, sources tell ESPN.”

The draft picks include the No. 16 selection in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft, a 2026 first-rounder originally belonging to the Phoenix Suns, unprotected picks in 2028 and 2030, and a lightly protected 2029 pick swap.

In switching from No. 22 to No. 3, Bane embraces a symbolic restart. The jersey reveal followed shortly after the blockbuster was made official.

While the price was high, the Magic made it clear they believe Bane is worth it.

“Over his five years in the NBA, Desmond has distinguished himself as one of the elite guards in our league, and we look forward to his shooting, IQ and wide-ranging skill set in helping our team take a step forward,” Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said in an official statement. “Desmond’s character is held in high regard across the league and we believe he will fit seamlessly with our existing players both on and off the court.

Bane leaves behind a strong legacy in Memphis, where he evolved from a late first-round pick into one of the NBA’s most respected two-way guards. Across 313 games, he posted career averages of 17.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists, while boasting elite shooting splits— 47.2 percent from the field, 41 percent from beyond the arc, and nearly 90 percent from the free-throw line. His 2024–25 campaign was his best yet, with personal bests in points (19.2), rebounds (6.1), assists (5.3), and steals (1.2).Also Read: NBA Trade News: Cameron Johnson’s trade value climbs as Desmond Bane sets precedent with massive Memphis Grizzlies-Orlando Magic dealOrlando ended last season at 41–41, clinching the seventh seed before being eliminated by the Boston Celtics in five games.
