In an attempt to bolster the team’s strength, the Ottawa Senators signed forward Shane Pinto on Thursday. Pinto signed a four-year, worth $30 million contract extension. The forward, who turned 25 on Wednesday, could have become a restricted free agent after this season.

According to the NHL, he has 14 points (eight goals, six assists) in 17 games and 121 points (59 goals, 62 assists) in 221 regular-season games since joining the Senators in 2020-21. Besides, Pinto had two points (one goal, one assist) in his Stanley Cup Playoff debut, a six-game loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2025 Eastern Conference First Round. The deal will carry a yearly cap hit of $7.5M and carry through two years of Pinto’s unrestricted free agent eligibility.

The deal takes effect at the start of the next season and will run through the 2029-30 season. Reports suggest that Pinto's deal is the fifth-largest active contract after Sanderson ($64.4 million), Brock Boeser ($50.75 million), Jackson Blake ($45 million), and Nick Schmaltz ($40.95 million). It is to be noted that Ottawa chose Pinto in the second round (No. 32) of the 2019 NHL Draft. He played for the United States for the past two years at the IIHF World Championship, winning gold in 2025. He was invited to the orientation camp in Plymouth, Michigan, on August 26 and 27 to help decide the final 25-man roster for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 in February.
