An ammonia gas leak was reported on Sunday at St. Peter’s Paul Seafoods Exports in the Kannikaipper area near Periyapalayam in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district, injuring more than 20 people.
After being informed by the district administration, the NDRF’s 4th Battalion headquarters in Arakkonam dispatched a specialised Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) rescue team to the site.
A 30-member team equipped with personal protective equipment, gas detectors and CBRN rescue gear reached the spot and began rescue operations. The team is shifting affected people to safe locations, isolating the leak zone, assessing the impact of the gas leak and working with local authorities to ensure public safety.
Similar Cases In The Past
On July 20, 2024, around 29 women workers were hospitalised after an alleged ammonia leak at a private seafood processing plant in Thoothukudi district’s Pudur Pandiyapuram area. Workers reported suffocation, eye irritation and giddiness. Authorities later said the incident may have been caused by smoke from an electrical short circuit rather than an ammonia leak.
On December 27, 2023, an ammonia leak from a pipeline linked to a fertiliser unit in Ennore, Chennai, left over 50 people hospitalised after residents complained of breathlessness and nausea. The plant’s operations were temporarily suspended following the incident.
For a video background, the 2023 Ennore leak is probably the stronger reference because it was widely covered and involved a larger number of people, while the 2024 Thoothukudi incident is more similar to the current case as it also involved a seafood processing facility.
