Some fans at Bukit Jalil National Stadium left before the match ended, and a few boos were heard at the final whistle.

In their first of two post-season games in Asia, United started with several regulars including Harry Maguire, Rasmus Hojlund, Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, and Andre Onana.

At kickoff, temperatures reached 32 degrees Celsius, and the ASEAN All Stars looked more threatening. Filipino defender Amani Aguinaldo narrowly missed with a powerful strike in the 16th minute.

Midway through the first half, Onana made a low save that won over the largely United-supporting crowd. Mainoo offered Manchester United’s first real threat with a 25-yard effort that was deflected for a corner, and later his shot was cleared off the line in the 38th minute.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes entered in the second half, and his half-volley drew a loud cheer after a lackluster restart. However, the local unit made their overturn of an United attack count as Lwin got on the end of a ball threaded in by Adrian Segecic to belt in the winner to stun United. The hosts team nearly scored a second goal soon after, but Heaton’s intervention prevented further embarrassment.

United are slated to head to Hong Kong next for their upcoming friendly on Friday.
