A special court of Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Saturday sentenced former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years of rigorous imprisonment each in the Toshakhana-2 case, adding to the former premier’s mounting legal challenges.
The verdict was delivered by Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand during proceedings conducted inside Adiala Jail, where Imran Khan is currently lodged. The court held both accused guilty of misusing authority and committing criminal breach of trust in connection with state gifts.
Under the ruling, Imran Khan was awarded 10 years’ imprisonment under Sections 34 and 409 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which deal with common intention and criminal breach of trust, and an additional seven years under Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Bushra Bibi received an identical sentence under the same legal provisions.
In addition to the prison terms, the court imposed a fine of Rs 16.4 million on each of the convicts, warning that failure to pay would result in further imprisonment.
The case revolves around allegations that a luxury Bulgari jewellery set, gifted to Imran Khan by the Saudi crown prince during an official visit in May 2021, was later purchased at a significantly undervalued price, in violation of Toshakhana rules that govern the retention and disposal of gifts received by public office holders.
The latest conviction is expected to further complicate Imran Khan’s legal battle, as he continues to face multiple cases linked to corruption and misuse of authority.
