Pakistan is planning to deploy about 3,500 troops to the war-torn, blockaded Gaza Strip as part of the proposed International Stabilisation Force (ISF) for the territory, according to Pakistani diplomatic sources and military officials.
The development was first reported by Pakistani newspaper Dawn, which noted that Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi had said as recently as last week that Islamabad had not yet taken a decision on contributing troops to the ISF.
The plan, backed by US President Donald Trump, is a key element of his proposed 20-point peace plan for Gaza. The proposal calls for an internationally supported force to oversee reconstruction, border security and the demilitarisation of armed groups following the prolonged war between Israel and Hamas.
The Gaza conflict was triggered on October 7, 2023, when Hamas and allied militant groups launched a surprise offensive into southern Israel, killing an estimated around 1,200 people and taking roughly 251 hostages.
In response, the Israel Defense Forces launched a sustained military campaign in Gaza that has left more than 70,000 Palestinians dead and caused widespread destruction across the enclave, according to multiple health and conflict assessments.
Trump has urged Muslim-majority countries to contribute troops, logistics or equipment to the ISF, with the stated aim of securing Gaza’s borders with Israel and Egypt, protecting civilians and safeguarding humanitarian corridors.
Although Islamabad has not officially confirmed a final decision, Pakistan’s military leadership is understood to have held discussions with US officials regarding a potential deployment. Participation by Pakistani forces — which would mark a rare direct role for the country in an international peace mission in West Asia — could help strengthen ties with Washington, but is also likely to face domestic resistance from Islamist parties and political opponents wary of any association with Israel or Western-led security initiatives.
