Suhail Shaheen, Taliban spokesperson, to News18: "If the TTP is attacking Pakistan inside their country, how can we take action or responsibility? It’s their responsibility."

Taliban spokesperson Suhail Shaheen spoke to News18.

Taliban spokesperson Suhail Shaheen spoke to News18.

Pakistan will never be successful in any covert operation against Afghanistan, Suhail Shaheen, Taliban spokesperson and Afghanistan-Pakistan Doha talks insider, told News18 in an exclusive interview.

“Pakistan doesn’t want a solution, which is why they are not negotiating. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) attacks in Pakistan are their own responsibility," he said.

Edited excerpts:

Pakistan has attempted covert operations and want to change the government. They want to use Haqqani and Kandhari factions for this job…

What Pakistan is doing is illegal. The Talibani people have laid down their lives in so many decades. It’s not easy to do so. If they want to solve the problem, they should talk through negotiations and talks and not bring demons which are not practical. They should bring solutions which are acceptable.

Pakistan is doing covert operations against the Taliban and using Resistance Force and others. Do you think it is possible for them to form a government in the present scenario?

It is not possible. It is a futile exercise and it will escalate the situation rather than solving the issue. They should focus on results and bring out solutions.

Pakistan is saying you are not doing enough to control the TTP in Pakistan and you are not becoming mediator…

If they have proof, they should share evidence with us so that we can review it. We can assure that Afghan soil is not used for any such activities against Pakistan. If the TTP is attacking Pakistan inside their country, how can we take action or responsibility? It’s their responsibility. Your internal security is your responsibility, we can only guarantee what will happen in Afghanistan.

Has the Afghan Intelligence Agency GDI given a report that Pakistan is planning covert operation through Taliban commanders, providing money and safe passage to revolt against the Taliban government?

I have not seen the reports. Both countries shouldn’t do these escalations, they should talk instead. Secondly, it’s not easy to recruit commanders against members of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s government.

Have you noticed any destabilisation attempt by the ISI against the Taliban government?

So far I have not seen, but I have heard like you told me…I have not seen such attempts.

Failed talks to covert operation and other bids by Pakistan’s ISI. What is your final take?

I think the effective way to solve the issue is to sit with the TTP and carry on negotiations. Our first agenda is ceasefire. This will be an effective way of solution of the issue. Confrontation will not work.
