The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture has decided to take up critical issues concerning air safety.
Several members had expressed their reservations about the condition of the airlines in the country after the recent air crash in Ahmedabad. Multiple reports have also come on a daily basis about the technical glitches that several airlines, including Air India, have witnessed over the last couple of weeks.
The committee, chaired by JDU MP Sanjay Jha, will schedule a comprehensive meeting in the first week of July.
The day-long session is expected to engage with a wide range of stakeholders in the aviation sector.
KEY DEVELOPMENTS EXPECTED
The exact contours of this meeting and how many hours will be given for discussion are likely to be finalised in a day or so.
- Leading aviation firms Boeing and Air India are likely to be summoned.
- Top officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, BCAS (Bureau of Civil Aviation Security), and DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) will also be called in.
- Representatives from helicopter operators and commercial airlines are expected to participate.
- Former civil aviation ministers and retired pilots may also be invited for their insights.
Several members in the committee have requested Jha to ask Rajiv Pratap Reddy, who is a member of the committee, to stay out of this meeting because he is the former Civil Aviation Minister and also a pilot who flies for IndiGo right now.
The committee is expected to finalise its findings and submit a report in the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Ahead of the meeting, the committee, which is travelling to Gangtok on June 29, has decided to take an Air India flight for the experience.
Sources say that this was a conscious decision made by the committee chairman to get first-hand experience of travelling using the airline after the recent crash.
