SHIMLA: The centuries old festival ‘Pathar Mela’ (festival of stones) was held on Tuesday, a day after the Diwali, in Dhami area near Shimla.Held at ‘Khel Ka Chaura’ place, this ritual saw two groups—Jamogi and Katedu—engage in a symbolic stone-pelting event, rooted deeply in local Dev traditions.
Stones were thrown between the two sides for nearly 40 minutes on Tuesday afternoon, halting only when elderly Subhash from the Katedu group was injured.Following the tradition, Subhash’s blood was used to mark a sacred tilak at the Bhadrakali temple. Hundreds gathered to witness the event, dancing to the rhythmic beats of drums in a unique blend of spirituality. This centuries-old tradition, initiated by a local royal family as an alternative to human sacrifice, symbolizes devotion and seeks blessings for prosperity of the region. The festival traces its origins to the 18th century, a time when human sacrifices were commonly practiced. Locals believe the tradition safeguards the Dhami region from natural disasters and illnesses.
