A shocking incident from Shivpuri district has once again highlighted the grim state of rural healthcare in Madhya Pradesh. A video of man with a saline drip still attached to his arm is making rounds on the internet. It shows the man walking through a busy market in Sirsaud village in Shivpuri district.
The incident has raised serious questions about medical negligence and the lack of oversight in local health services.
The disturbing sight, captured on video and widely shared on social media, showed the man carrying the saline bottle in his hand as he wandered through the marketplace. Locals said he had been treated by a quack who inserted the IV drip and then abandoned him midway through treatment.
This incident comes only days after a newborn baby was stolen from the district hospital, deepening public anger over the repeated failures of the district’s health system.
As the video triggered outrage, Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr Sanjay Risheshwar confirmed that an inquiry had been initiated.
“It wouldn’t be appropriate to comment without a proper inquiry. If it’s proven that the patient was left on a drip like this, it will be treated as serious negligence," he was quoted as saying by NDTV.
Dr Risheshwar added that if the patient was being treated in a private clinic, strict action would be taken against those responsible.
The case has once again drawn attention to the fragile healthcare infrastructure in Shivpuri.
According to official data, Madhya Pradesh has just one doctor for every 1,460 people, far below the national average. The state’s population of over 7.26 crore would require nearly 89,000 doctors, but there are only around 49,730 registered practitioners across both public and private sectors.
The shortage is particularly severe in rural areas. As per the Rural Health Statistics report, Madhya Pradesh faces a 94 per cent deficit of medical specialists, among the highest in India.
