Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan is scheduled to inaugurate the newly-developed elephant camp at Musalimadugu, abutting the Koundinya Wildlife Sanctuary near Palamaner in Chittoor district, on Sunday (November 9). The Deputy Chief Minister will arrive at Palamaner from Tirupati Airport by helicopter.

Speaking to The Hindu on Friday, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) G. Subburaj said the Musalimadugu camp has been established to manage wild elephant movements and mitigate crop damage in the region. “Currently, we have six trained elephants here, including four brought recently from Karnataka,” he said.

Following the inauguration, Mr. Pawan Kalyan will hold a review meeting with forest and revenue officials to assess recent kumki(trained elephant) operations carried out to drive back stray elephants and protect farmlands in mandals bordering Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Mr. Subburaj said the elephant camp would serve as a crucial base for rapid response teams and wildlife management operations in the Koundinya Wildlife Sanctuary belt and other areas vulnerable to elephant incursions from neighbouring States.
