Several old social media posts of Dr Muzammil Shakeel, arrested following the recovery of a huge amount of explosives from his rented accommodation in Haryana’s Faridabad, have surfaced.
In one of the posts, dated May 3, 2013, he defended terrorist Afzal Guru, accused of the 2001 Parliament terror attack, saying, “If Sarabjit is a martyr how Afzal was a terrorist."
Another post from May 15, 2013, reportedly featured a photograph of Indian Army personnel offering namaz, accompanied by Quranic verses and hadiths. However, these posts were made over a decade ago.
Who Is Dr Muzammil Shakeel?
Dr Muzammil Shakeel, an MBBS doctor, was arrested after police forces of Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, along with the Intelligence Bureau (IB) foiled a major terror plot and seized around 350 kg of explosives, an AK-47 rifle, and over 2,500 kg of ammunition from Faridabad.
Dr Muzammil Shakeel was the occupant of the Dhauj accommodation where the explosives and weapons were found.
Addressing a press conference, Faridabad Police Commissioner Satender Kumar Gupta said Shakil, whose name appeared with varying spellings across reports, was teaching at Al Falah University in Dhauj. He was a native of Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama, and a key link in the interstate and transnational terror module of Jaish-e-Mohamamd and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind outfits.
According to officials, Dr Shakeel had rented the accommodation about three months ago. Investigators said a local cleric revealed that he had rented out his room to an autorickshaw driver, who later sublet it to Ganaie for storing “luggage."
Muzammil was already on the radar of Jammu and Kashmir Police for allegedly putting up posters supporting Jaish-e-Mohammed in Srinagar. He was taken into custody by the Jammu & Kashmir Police on October 30, following the arrest of Dr Adil Ahmad Rather, another accused allegedly linked to the same terror network.
Investigators said information obtained during the interrogation of these two suspects led to Sunday’s recovery operation. Preliminary findings suggest that both individuals were part of a larger module suspected to have cross-border links and were planning large-scale attacks in northern India.
Hours after the recovery in Faridabad, a blast rocked Delhi as a car exploded near the historic Red Fort, killing eight people and injuring 20 others. The car has been traced to a Kashmir-based doctor with suspected terror links.
Security agencies are now probing possible international linkages, funding routes, and communication channels associated with the accused.
