Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh appealed to the public to maintain communal harmony and remain alert to what he described as disruptive elements attempting to sow division in the conflict-scarred state.

“Peace is the foremost option for development," the Chief Minister said, urging citizens across communities to stand united in working towards lasting stability. He added that developmental work would continue across all regions, including remote areas, despite the ongoing challenges.

Singh said that in the two months and twenty days since assuming office, he has engaged extensively with MLAs, officials and representatives from different communities. The Chief Minister also acknowledged that certain incidents had derailed the peace process while he assured the public that those responsible would be identified soon.

Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikhoon commended Singh’s hands-on approach, saying that even people living far from Imphal had appreciated the Chief Minister’s visits and expressed confidence in the new leadership. He urged civil society organisations to play an active role in sustaining peace, cautioning that hatred and division would only harm the state and delay progress.

“If people truly desire peace, it is achievable through unity," he said.

The appeals come against the backdrop of one of the worst episodes of ethnic violence in Manipur’s recent history. Since May 2023, clashes between the valley-based Meitei community and the hill-dwelling Kuki community have claimed at least 260 lives and displaced thousands more.
