Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George on Monday underwent a successful arthroscopic knee surgery after he suffered an injury during a recent workout, the team announced.
George had a successful surgery in New York and will start a rehab program with progress monitored and a reevaluation before the beginning of training camp two months later.
The surgery was performed by Dr Jonathan L. Glashow at the NYU Langone Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Centre.
George, a nine-time NBA All-Star, was signed by the Philadelphia 76ers last year after stints with the Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City and Los Angeles Clippers.
The Philadelphia 76ers, who haven’t gone past the second round of the playoffs since losing to the LA Lakers 24 years ago in the finals, were expected to contend for the title with George joining star center Joel Embiid and guard Tyrese Maxey on a four-year deal worth $212 million.
But the Philadelphia 76ers went 24-58, their worst record since 2015-16 and missed the playoffs.
George was nagged by several injuries, including a knee bone bruise and adductor problems and was benched for the season in March with knee injuries, averaging 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 41 matches, half a season.
Embiid played in just 19 matches because of injuries and the star trio with George and Maxey was just on the court together in 15 games.
Over a 15-season NBA career, George has averaged 20.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game.
Embiid, who also had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee three months ago, is on track to be healthy for the beginning of camp, as per Philadelphia 76ers president Daryl Morey.
The scenario will put more of an onus on the Philadelphia 76ers coming to terms with restricted free agent Quentin Grimes, who is best at shooting guard but is dynamic enough to play minutes at small forward.
It might ensure that the Philadelphia 76ers once again have Kelly Oubre Jr in the starting lineup as well, as he was for much of 2024.
