Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed to Russian President Vladimir Putin that India is ready to make all possible contributions towards a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict when the latter called to greet him on his 75th birthday on Wednesday.

During a phone call with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, PM Modi had expressed his support for the US President’s initiatives for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict.

Wednesday’s phone conversation took place more than a fortnight after their highly-publicised meetings in Tianjin (China), where they had met during the SCO leaders’ summit on August 31-September 1. This is their third phone conversation since August.

After the phone call, Modi posted on X: “Thank you, my friend, President Putin, for your phone call and warm wishes on my 75th birthday. We are committed to further strengthening our Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. India is ready to make all possible contributions towards a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict.”

In a message to Modi, Putin said, “Your work as head of government has earned you great respect from your compatriots and enormous prestige on the international stage. Under your guidance, India has achieved impressive results in the social, economic, scientific and technological spheres.”

“You are making a great personal contribution to strengthening the privileged strategic partnership between our countries and to promoting mutually beneficial Russian-Indian cooperation in various areas,” the Russian President said.

During the phone call, the Kremlin said that Vladimir Putin offered his best wishes to Narendra Modi on his 75th birthday, wishing him good health, prosperity and further success in his service to the nation. “The President of Russia emphasised that under Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is pursuing an independent, sovereign policy while demonstrating impressive economic results”, it said.
