US President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has informed him that India will stop buying oil from Russia and called it a “big step" towards isolating Moscow economically.

“So I was not happy that India was buying oil, and he assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia," Trump told reporters during a White House event. “That’s a big step. Now we’re going to get China to do the same thing," he added.

Meanwhile, India has not issued any response on the matter.

Interestingly, Trump had made similar claims previously which was denied by Indian side.

In August, Trump slapped 50% tariffs against India for buying Russian oil. An additional 25% duty was slapped on other products, compounding strains in already fraught trade ties.

This was in the backdrop of rising tensions with India since his announcement of 25% tariffs on India, and then the subsequent 25% additional duties on Indian exports to the US for New Delhi’s decision to continue buying Russian oil.

He later announced that trade negotiations with India would be put on hold until the issue of New Delhi’s energy ties with Moscow is “resolved".

“No, not until we get it resolved," Trump answered to a reporter’s question about whether he expected increased trade negotiations between the US and India after 50% tariffs.

However, India has remained defiant against Trump’s pressure tactics to force India to stop buying Russian oil. It has said that country will secure energy based on the best possible rates and logistics.

While Washington has termed its tactic as a move to force Russia to come to the negotiating table with Ukraine; however, New Delhi still remains the second-largest buyer of Russian oil, citing its national interests.

According to a Bloomberg report, Russia’s Urals grade is being offered at the lower price for cargoes loading in late September and October. The discount stood at around $2.50 last week, compared with just $1 in July.
