Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday planted saplings at his official residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, on World Environment Day, fulfilling a promise made during his recent visit to Kutch. During the visit, a group of women who showed remarkable courage in the 1971 war met PM Modi and presented him with Sindoor saplings.

Touched by the gesture, PM Modi said he would plant the sapling at his residence.

In response to the Pahalgam attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives, the Indian Armed Forces launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ on May 7 and targeted terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the killing of more than 100 terrorists. India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on May 10.

This year’s World Environment Day marks the launch of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" campaign’s second phase, aiming to plant 10 crore trees from June 5 to September 30. The initiative encourages people to plant trees in their mothers’ names, symbolising love and responsibility towards nature.

The Prime Minister also planted a sapling at the Bhagwan Mahavir Vanasthali Park in Delhi, calling it a part of the “effort to reforest the Aravalli range – the Aravalli Green Wall project."

PM Modi in a post on X said, “It is widely known that the Aravalli range is one of the oldest on our planet, covering Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi. The past several years have brought to the fore several environmental challenges relating to this range, which our Government is committed to mitigating."

“Our focus is to rejuvenate areas linked with this range. We are going to work with the respective local administrations and going to emphasise things such as improving water systems, curbing dust storms, stopping the eastward expansion of the Thar desert and more," he added.

The Prime Minister emphasised that, beyond traditional methods, new techniques will be adopted, especially in urban and semi-urban areas with limited space, to promote greenery in the Aravalli range and other regions.

“Plantation activities will be geo-tagged and monitored on the Meri LiFE portal. I call upon the youth of our nation to take part in this movement and add to our planet’s green cover," he said.

The Prime Minister has consistently emphasised the significance of tree plantation and environmental protection, urging every family to plant trees during the monsoon season and take pride in their contribution to the environment.
