Indian Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi lauded the efforts of Chess World Champion D Gukesh on his first ever classical format win over Magnus Carlsen on Monday in the Norway Chess 2025.
The national Premier took to social media to applaud the teenager with a caption that read, “An exceptional achievement by Gukesh!"
“Congratulations to him for triumphing over the very best. His first-ever win against Magnus Carlsen in Round 6 of Norway Chess 2025 showcases his brilliance and dedication," the PM’s post continued.
“Wishing him continued success in the journey ahead," the 74-year-old added.

Gukesh, playing with white pieces on the day, capitalised on a late-game blunder from the 34-year-old Norwegian GM to pick up the win.
The Indian, who appeared to chase the game midway through the matchup, turned it on its head before condemning Carlsen to a defeat in an explosive end game. Gukesh looked moved following the victory as he took a beat to take in the essence of the moment before penning down the final touches on his game notes.
Carlsen was visibly frustrated following the defeat as he smacked the table the board rested on before appreciating Gukesh with a handshake and a pat on the back as the poster boy of Norwegian chess made a quick passage out of the event centre following his loss on home turf.
