The North Zone Police have issued a public advisory urging residents to take precautionary measures to secure their homes during Christmas, New Year and Sankranti festive period, with many people expected to travel to their native places.
Houses left unattended during the holiday season are vulnerable to theft and other property-related offences. Citizens have been advised to ensure that all doors and windows are properly locked before leaving and asked to inform their local police station about their departure and expected date of return to enable focused patrolling in residential areas.
Residents have also been asked to inform neighbours or local watch committees so that someone can keep an eye on their homes in their absence. The police suggested the use of CCTV cameras, security alarms with motion sensors and central locking systems to enhance safety.
The advisory cautioned against leaving visible signs of vacancy such as newspapers, garbage or milk packets outside houses, and recommended storing valuables, cash and jewellery in bank lockers instead of keeping them at home. People have also been advised not to leave spare keys in hidden locations and to avoid sharing travel plans or live locations on social media until after returning.
Vehicle owners have been asked to park vehicles inside their premises, ensure they are locked and use additional security devices where possible. The police said local stations would maintain records of vacant houses and intensify day and night beat patrolling in areas where residents are away.
