Punjab Police on Wednesday encountered suspects allegedly involved in the killing of kabaddi player Rana Balachauria, who was shot dead during a tournament in Mohali earlier this week.

Further details regarding the encounter and the identities of those involved are awaited.

Rana Balachauria, a well-known kabaddi player and one of the organisers of the tournament, was shot dead by unidentified assailants while the event was underway on Monday. The incident occurred in front of a packed crowd, triggering panic and chaos at the venue.

According to police, the attackers arrived at the venue on a motorcycle and approached Balachauria under the pretext of taking a selfie. Moments later, they opened fire at close range, hitting him multiple times in the head and upper body. He sustained four to five gunshot wounds.

Balachauria was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The Bambiha gang later claimed responsibility for the killing, alleging that the victim had provided shelter to individuals involved in the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala, according to reports.

Earlier on Tuesday, the police said that two of the three shooters were identified as members of the Lucky Patial gang.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Mohali senior superintendent of police Harmandeep Singh Hans said that two of the three motorcycle-borne shooters who opened fire during a tournament in Sector 79 on Monday evening have been identified as Aditya Kapoor and Karan Pathak, both from Amritsar district.

The accused, he said, belong to the Lucky Patial gang that is associated with the Davinder Bambiha gang.
