Police plan to make Coimbatore roads safer for pedestrians

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police are planning to make city roads safer for pedestrians by installing speed governance cameras, foot overbridges and pavements for pedestrians.According to data available with the city police, 1,160 road accidents happened in 2025, in which 274 people were killed. A total of 350 pedestrians met with accidents either while walking along the roads or crossing them, in which 94 people were killed. This means that pedestrians were involved in more than 30% of accidents. This was mainly because of a lack of pavements and facilities for pedestrians to cross the road.

In many areas, there were no pavements for people to walk on. The city police requested the district administration and the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation to make arrangements for pedestrians to walk on and cross the roads safely.Coimbatore city police commissioner Dr N Kannan said that the city faced traffic issues in some places, particularly on the Avinashi Road, where traffic snarls occurred at the GD Naidu flyover down ramps.

Major roads lacked pedestrian crossings and pavements for pedestrians. Because of this, many pedestrians were hit by moving vehicles. The city police were planning to create facilities to prevent pedestrian accidents, he said.He added that they discussed with the district administration and the corporation the need to build pavements alongside the major roads and foot overbridges to cross the roads. The corporation is planning to build a few foot overbridges (FOBs), including one at Lakshmi Mills Junction, to improve pedestrian movement and safety, he added. The city police, along with the district administration and corporation officials, inspected the site at Lakshmi Mills Junction on Monday, where the FOB is planned.
