Sub-inspector Nagaraj of the Yelahanka New Town, has been suspended for having alleged links with an accused involved in multiple land disputes and civil cases.
Ramesh Banoth, Joint Commissioner (East Division), issued the suspension order on Friday. Nagaraj was allegedly part of the close circle of the accused Dasa.
Despite being aware of his background, Nagaraj was reportedly seen in public with Dasa. Multiple videos and photographs of the policeman celebrating a birthday with Dasa and being seen in public while on duty went viral on social media.
As the images circulated on social media and drew criticism, Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh ordered an inquiry headed by Mr. Banoth. The inquiry report by the Joint Commissioner reportedly established that the sub-inspector was in close association with Dasa.
Sources said while Dasa did not have cases in the city limits, he was involved in several cases, including mediating civil disputes, in the Bengaluru Rural jurisdiction.
Nagaraj’s ‘friendship’ with Dasa came to light amid repeated statements by Home Minister G. Parameshwara that the government would not tolerate the involvement of police officers in civil cases.
Director-General of Police M.A. Saleem has also warned officers against engaging in such matters.
With this suspension, the total number of officers suspended from duty this year has risen to 131.
