Vemulawada Market Committee chairman and a local Congress party leader Rondi Raju was attacked with knives by two assailants just a few hours after the gram panchayat election at Nagaiahpally village in Vemulawada mandal of Rajanna Sircilla district around Thursday midnight.
Mr. Raju suffered a grievous head injury in the attack. He was admitted to the Government Area Hospital in the temple town of Vemulawada. The ‘post-poll violence’ incident prompted demands for stern action against the culprits.
The incident occurred barely a couple of hours after the declaration of the gram panchayat election results.
The ruling Congress-party backed candidate Mallesham won the sarpanch post in the election held on Thursday. Mr. Raju was returning home after the victory celebrations when the assailants attacked him with knives.
A grievously injured Mr. Raju reportedly named two supporters of a defeated candidate in the gram panchayat polls behind the attack. The Vemulawada rural police have registered a case and are investigating.
