PPA to survey six Godavari streams in Telangana to assess Polavaram backwater impact

The Polavaram Project Authority (PPA) will conduct a survey of six streams joining the Godavari River in Telangana to assess the impact of backwaters from the Polavaram project.

At a PPA meeting held in Hyderabad on Friday, both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana agreed to the Authority’s proposal to take up the survey. The survey of two streams — Munneru and Kinnerasani — has already been completed. Telangana has been demanding a joint survey of six additional streams, but Andhra Pradesh had not responded positively so far. During the meeting, the Authority proposed that it would itself carry out the survey.

Officials of the Andhra Pradesh Water Resources Department pointed out that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had directed a survey of only two streams, which has already been completed, and that demarcation work was expected to begin soon. However, Telangana raised the issue again during the meeting, a senior official said.
