The Punjab Police has approached dating app Tinder, seeking details of an account allegedly linked to Pro-Khalistan preacher Amritpal Singh, who is accused in the murder of Sikh activist Gurpreet Singh Hari Nau. According to a communication dated May 26, accessed by news agency PTI, the Faridkot police informed Tinder that they are investigating the murder of Gurpreet Singh Hari Nau, a member of the radical outfit 'Waris Punjab De' led by Amritpal Singh. Nau, who ran the Facebook page 'Hari Nau Talks' and was openly critical of Amritpal, was shot dead by two assailants on a motorcycle on October 9, 2024, while returning from a village Gurdwara.The police have registered a case under FIR No. 159 dated October 10, 2024, at Sadar Kotkapura Police Station, Faridkot, invoking Sections 103(1), 126(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with provisions of the Arms Act, 1959. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav had earlier stated that the killing was allegedly orchestrated by Amritpal Singh, who is currently detained in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA).
What details Punjab Police has sought from Tinder
In its communication to Tinder, the police noted, "During the investigation, a Tinder account under the name 'Amrit Sandhu' was identified, suspected to be linked with Amritpal Singh, an accused in the FIR. The communication and analysis of data from this account may provide critical evidence for the investigation."
The police have requested Tinder to provide subscriber details, including name, date of birth, phone number, location information, and IP address logs since January 1, 2019. They also sought details of linked email IDs, phone numbers, uploaded photos and media files, friends/contacts list, mutual matches, chat history, messages exchanged on the platform, and any other relevant information.
