Tensions remain high across parts of Dakshina Kannada district following the brutal murder of a 35-year-old pickup truck driver in Koltthamajalu. The killing ignited sharp communal reactions, leading authorities to impose prohibitory orders across multiple taluks to prevent further unrest.

Abdul Raheem, also known as Imtiyaz, was allegedly hacked to death on Tuesday by a group of assailants while unloading sand from his vehicle near Ira Kodi. Police said that another individual sustained injuries in the sword attack and is currently receiving hospital treatment. Abdul Raheem’s death sparked widespread outrage, particularly on social media, where many have claimed it to be a retaliatory act for the recent murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty. Crowds gathered near Highland Hospital in Mangaluru on Tuesday evening before Abdul Raheem’s body was moved for autopsy.

SDPI district president Anwar Sadath claimed, “Raheem was a hardworking youth, not affiliated to any political organisation, and was lured to the site under the pretext of work and then killed by a gang affiliated to right-wing groups."

Prohibitory Orders Imposed

In response to the escalating situation, district authorities enforced Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarika Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), prohibiting large gatherings in Bantwal, Puttur, Belthangady, Sullia, and Kadaba taluks until 6 PM on May 30. A separate prohibitory order has also been issued for Mangaluru taluk, falling under the Mangaluru City Commissionerate jurisdiction.

Heavy police deployment was maintained in sensitive areas across Dakshina Kannada, with checkpoints established to monitor movement and prevent the spread of rumors.
