 A Major Milestone for Jharkhand's Power Infrastructure

Ramgarh: Seven years after Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi laid the foundation of the Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL) in May 2018, commercial operations of unit-1 of the 3×800MW phase-1 PVUNL began on Wednesday, officials said.Jharkhand would receive 85% of the power produced by PVUNL as per the MoU signed between the PVUNL, a subsidiary of the NTPC Ltd., and the Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL), they added.“It is a proud moment for us to announce the successful declaration of the commercial operation state (COD) for unit #1 on November 5, 2025. This significant achievement marks a major milestone in PVUNL’s commitment to enhancing the Jharkhand state power infrastructure and contributing to national energy security,” PVUNL announced in a statement on Wednesday.The chief executive officer (CEO) of the PVUNL, A K Sehgal, said, “The plant is equipped with the latest technology for suitable operations, i.e., with ultra-supercritical parameters for high efficiency, air-cooled condenser for very minimal water consumption, and 100% dry ash technology for 100% productive ash usage. Unit 1 underwent rigorous testing and stabilisation, demonstrating its reliability and efficiency.

The persistent hard work and dedication of the entire PVUNL team were instrumental in achieving this critical milestone. PVUNL remains committed to operating the unit at peak performance in a safe and sustainable manner, ensuring a stable and secure power supply, an official said.PVUNL was incorporated in October 2015, and NTPC subsidiary PVUNL took over the assets of Patratu Thermal Power Station (PTPS) of the state govt, paving the way for the installation of a 4000 MW supercritical thermal power plant in Patratu of Ramgarh district in two phases. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the online foundation on May 25, 2018, according to an official.
