Rain alert in Guntur: GMC steps up preventive measures

With a low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal triggering heavy rainfall across the region, the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has stepped up special measures to prevent flooding and civic disruptions in the city.

Municipal Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu personally inspected several vulnerable areas, including KVP Colony and Joseph Nagar, on Saturday (September 13). He directed officials to ensure immediate clearance of stagnant water and keep pumping motors ready in low-lying localities.

All GMC officials and ward secretariat staff have been instructed to remain on duty until the rains subside, with leaves cancelled. The Commissioner emphasized round-the-clock coordination between town planning, engineering, and public health departments to address emergencies.

The GMC helpline — 0863-2345103 — has been activated for citizens to report urgent issues. Engineering staff were ordered to secure uninterrupted drinking water supply despite possible power outages, while the Additional Deputy Health Officer was told to keep teams ready to clear fallen trees.

Preventive steps are being taken near Kankaragunta RUB, Chuttugunta Centre, and other flood-prone zones. Mr. Srinivasulu also appealed to residents, especially those in low-lying areas, to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and boil drinking water for the next two days.
